Driving Change: Lessons from the Caribbean’s E-Mobility Dialogue

To accelerate Caribbean EV adoption, we must look beyond the vehicles toward the standards and data that prove the business case. This was the core focus of the Caribbean E-mobility Dialogue, a two-part knowledge series hosted by Caribbean Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency (CCREEE) and The UWI Mona Campus in October 2025.

The series first examined “Tracking the Momentum,” with case studies from Barbados and Costa Rica. Expert Giovani Buckle of CCREEE noted that while social and economic hurdles remain, transitions are accelerating through strategic financing and new policy incentives. The second session focused on data-driven design, showcasing how pilot projects in Grenada, Jamaica, and Saint Lucia use operational data to optimize vehicle selection and charging locations.

A central takeaway for the 160+ regional participants was the urgent need for a harmonized technical framework to ensure charging compatibility across CARICOM. To successfully pivot from internal combustion engines, the Caribbean must align four critical pillars: clear national policies, accessible financing, real-world data, and unified technical standards. By avoiding a fragmented market, the region can ensure a seamless, scalable transition to a low-carbon transport future.
